For most of human history, theology and philosophy were not as separated as they are today. The greatest philosophical thinkers were typically also the greatest theologians. If philosophy aims at the pursuit of wisdom, one would expect God to be involved. If theology is aimed at knowing God, one would expect rational reflection on the world to play a paramount role. Below is a chart I put together that illustrates the slow separation of philosophy from theology, how certain movements tried to keep the two together, and how hopefully the two are heading towards reunification.
